Hunting on Wildlife Management Areas in Vernon Parish
Today, many local hunters form hunting clubs and lease private property for hunting. This land is posted and may only be used by club members. There are however, several Wildlife Management Areas that are open for public hunting. These include Fort Polk, Peason Ridge, Clear Creek, and Walnut Hill. View the Vernon Parish Map showing Wildlife Management Areas.

Hunter Regulations on the Wildlife Management Areas are usually the same as the state regulations. You must, however, purchase a Wildlife Management Area permit along with your hunting license. This seasonal permit allows you to hunt on any state WMA for the season, although daily check-in at one of the self-clearing stations is still required.

To use the self-clearing stations:

    1. Fill out the form which is available at the station.
    2. Leave one section at the station, put one section in your vehicle, and keep the last section with you.
    3. When leaving, stop at the station and complete the form, showing what you harvested during your visit.

Additional Information for hunting on Fort Polk / Peason Ridge
If you'd like to hunt on the Fort Polk or Peason Ridge WMA, you must also obtain a FREE Fort Polk permit each season. This is in addition to the state hunter's permit with WMA stamp. View the Vernon Parish Map showing Wildlife Management Areas.

Hunters should be aware that both the Fort Polk and Peason areas are used for military training. During hunting season, maps are posted at the self-clearing stations showing any off-limits areas. You may also call the Fort Polk Game Enforcement Office at (337) 531-5715 or check their website at www.jrtc-polk.army.mil/hunt2/hunt/default.htm to be sure the area you want to enter is open for use.
