Gallery One Ellleven Youth Exhibit, 2011

What do you get when you take Van Gogh's tumultuous vision of the universe, a "Starry Night", hand it to a bunch of junior high kids and ask them to produce their own version? A kaleidoscope of paintings that, at first glance, resembles the redundancy of a wallpaper pattern, but when you really stop to look at each one individually, you see the spark of individualism, the unique and beautiful styling of each. That was the project for the main body of exhibits from Leesville Jr. High School. Vernon Middle School students began with identical masks which they decorated in a wild variety of colors and designs.

And if the colors of these pieces are a bit overwhelming? The exhibits from Leesville High School students focus on black & white. Scratchboard, pen and ink, pencil, and renderings highlight most of their entries. Pickering and Hornbeck High Schools are represented by a variety of media and subject matter.

The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts is also widely represented in this exhibit, and you quickly see why this school produces some of the best student art work in the south. From collages and mixed media to sculptural works created from computer parts, the work is as varied in style as it is in subject matter.

The Student Exhibit at Gallery One Ellleven will be displayed until March 27. A public reception for the students and their parents will be held on March 19 at 5:00 pm in the Main Street District of Leesville. The reception will be held in conjunction with Spring Artwalk, 2011, so there'll be live music in the street provided by Henry Reggans & the Sidemen. The Leesville Jr. High School Youth Jazz Band will join them for several sets as well.
